Reyna’s Kirtle Dress

I’ve officially finished my dress for the Reyna garb. I spent 6 straight hours sewing, ironing and otherwise working on it, but it’s done. The pattern used was from an SCA handout that you can still find online for a viking kirtle. A viking woman would have shorter sleeves without the little gap so that they could be longer and I could still fit my arms in and would wear this under an apron dress (which Reyna will not be doing). Reyna will wear it with an assortment of belts, cinches, scarves and other things at various times depending on … Continue Reading…

Semi-final Longfang Trim Embroidery Pattern

LongfangBorderI think the trim is done, though I can’t finalize the pattern as of yet. I need to get materials and test, of course, before I finalize the template for use and post instructions and finished examples. If you use this pattern on your own (it’s intended for the Pattern darning stitch) I’d love to see your work, and have you tell me how it worked out. I’m not sure I’ll be able to get a test piece underway prior to Christmas…

The Garbing Begins…

Simplicity Pattern 1773Well, The process of selecting how I’m going to dress is underway.

I’ve already go the pattern shown on the left picked out, purchased and sitting here on my desk. I’ve planned to do the skirt of the full-length underdress cut to mid-shin and then use Skirt hikes to keep it out of the way (and of course, wear pants since Ulven are practical creatures like that). The outer dress will be cut shorter than that, and beveled more than shown in the pattern. But customization is half the fun, right?

I can’t wait to get my fabric. The first set will be our of sturdy, practical fabric. Travel and battle type clothing. Eventually I might put together something finer and less practical, though such things are not an Ulven (or a Longfang) priority. Eventually, I want to make a full leather overdress or two. Color pallets will be the bright end of Earth tones, so think fall leaves, perhaps a bit of grass.

Leather for belt pouches and the like needs to be acquired, I’ll need new sturdy leather-type boots… Depending on what I find, I may or may not need Winingas. We’ll see on that front, though. All will become much clearer as I put together things and settle my costume. Wait until I start talking cloak plans (and dreams) and begin to discuss what I want to do, and what I’ll end up having to do to afford something nice for now… That’s a post for another time, though…
